George Schmitt was the first great DB I remember. Sidney Haugabrook was very good too.

Didn't play defense for the Hens, but rb in the late 1970s. Then to Rams for a nice NFL career in the defensive backfield. A big time "hitter" rep. I believe he played at Tampa Bay and a final year with .....Maybe the Lions?

Another UD player of distinction from the Tubby years.

We used to call Ivory Sully..."Ivory Soap" since he fumbled a lot when he was a RB at UD. Good thing they moved him to defense in the pros.

Although not the best DB, but one of the best plays by a DB to me was:

Vince Hyland's interception and long romp to the endzone just before the half in the title game versus Youngstown State in '79. YSU was undefeated and had their way with UD in the first half. I believe they were about to go up by 14 when Vince grabbed his only INT of the year to reverse the game with only a few seconds left in the half. UD tied it on that play and went on to hold YSU scoreless that second half to secure the Title. Good memories.
Johnny Bush.
Neutralized Mike Siani in the 71 Nova game and a UD win after three losses.

How about Joe Purzycki

I remember very well how loud a Purzycki hit sounded, even from the top of the stadium. Ralph Borgess (captain on the 1971 championship team) called Purzycki the hardest hitter he'd ever seen.

Most talented DB that I have ever seen at UD was Anthony Walters. I remember when I first saw him on a Blue Hen practice field turning to Jerry O. and just shaking my head. The kid was a Big Ten/ACC player talent-wise and was a 4 year starter at UD and played in some big games for Delaware. And played 4 years in the NFL. If I remember correct; I believe he was the Philly Catholic League MVP and Navy offered him as a QB and he was committed to Wisconsin but a coaching change had him change to UD. Quite simply one of the the most gifted athletes that I ever seen in an UD uniform.
