2019 Field Hockey

Post by DCHen97 » Wed Apr 17, 2019 10:31 am

Incoming class for this fall announced and Rolf seems to have done well (again). Transfers who started at Duke and Maryland and an All-American from in state. Rest of the group looks impressive too. Would love to see another Final Four soon.

Of concern is that with the exception of the Graduate Student transfer from Duke none of the newcomers are from The Netherlands or Germany where Rolf has traditionally gotten most of his best Field Hockey players. Is the competition now out recruiting Rolf for those foreign players?

I wouldn’t read too much into it. There were only 7 open scholarships and only 6 available after one scholarship was given to the Duke graduate transfer from the Netherlands. 2 of the 7 recruits are from overseas. In comparison, we had 10 open scholarships in 2018 so there were more scholarships available for overseas players.

It’s interesting that the Netherlands’ Tessa Gote’s biography mentions that her father, Joe Gote, played football for the Blue Hens in 1974 and 1975 and rugby in 1976 through 1978. I’m assuming he’s Dutch but I don’t know that for sure. Does anyone remember him? Interesting question for long-time Blue Hen football fans. What foreign born players have played football for the Blue Hens over the years? I think there was an OL from Germany years ago but I could be wrong.

Also not included in that 7 is Sophie Giezeman, Lisa's sister, who's transfer was announced before spring semester.

Thanks. That’s interesting. He must have moved to the Netherlands after college.

Albany was RPI #17 and Miami was RPI #30 last year, so 2 decent wins.

Up next are American (#34 RPI last year) and Penn State (#14 RPI last year). Need to win both at home.

5 top-20 teams in the coaches' poll on the remaining schedule (and 3 of them in the current top 10 ten), so as always we have scheduled like an elite program should.

So how about showing up to support this top 20 program-- this is the best field hockey played in America. I know many don't relate to the field hockey sport because are not familiar. As a grandparent of a former field hockey player, who has since chosen to play lacrosse at UNC, this sport at UD deserves our support, as Rolf is always pursuing the best and championships. Let's get out and support this national level program ar our home. Thanks!!

I totally agree with this! As one who played for UD when the field was next to the decrepit Women's Gym and the grass was about 4 inches high, the game they play now barely resembles the old days. It is incredibly fast and highly skilled. I really love watching! Give it a try!
