Baseball 2020

Schedule released today. This is why it makes sense to have turf and now lights. Hens will be at home a lot this year.

Some new teams coming in - Rhode Island, Mass - Lowell, Wofford, Gardner Webb. Any word on Sullivan's progress? It would be good to see that fast ball in 2020.

The lineups for the so called Blue Gold World Series are out on the website. Jack Goan is missing from the lineup, but he is still on the roster. He and Zach Miller were the two starting catchers last year, and with Zach Miller transferring in the offseason, hopefully Goan will be available in the spring. Is he injured?

Guys commit earlier and earlier now a days so no real surprises with recruiting class, but Sherm signed the top two in state pitchers for 2020. Dom Velasquez from Dover, who has been committed for a couple years now, and Chad Reichold from Milford, who originally committed to Wake Forest but switched to UD back in the summer.

Both should compete for weekend spots from day 1.

Season starts next weekend against Florida Atlantic. UD picked 7th in the CAA. Baker and Carpenter named pre season All CAA. Hutchins, Wakeley, and Sullivan Honorable Mention.

I’d have to imagine this is a make or break year for Sherm.

The hitting looks to be better this year. A couple of the transfers should help - Marti led the Patriot League in conference batting average, and Greenly from UVA may help. Pitching is a question mark. If Sullivan can come back from his arm injury and throw that smokin' fastball again (reaching 100 mph in practice) the staff will be OK. Hopefully there is a freshman or two that are good enough to step in. It's rare for more than one true freshman to be good enough to make a real impact. Sherman had some high praise for Riley as a hitter when he signed.

Since Zach Miller transferred to small college power Catawba, will Goan be the everyday catcher?

Well that would be a significant loss for the team. Goan, a former national junior college player of the year, was one of the top returning power hitters, leading the team in home runs last year. He might have been in the 5 spot in the batting order this year. Since Miller transferred, we are left with 3 untested freshman catchers. Catchers are clearly important, and other teams can kill you with stolen bases.

The team seems to suffer this type of misfortune frequently. Last year, we lost Baker and Sullivan, two of the top players, for the season, and the previous year it was Walter, the staff ace. Losing players like that for the season make a real difference in the won loss record. Years ago, the team lost the top 3 starting pitchers due to injury before the season started.

Injury. Now he may be able to hit. I didn’t get a 100% clear answer but he is listed in the preview on the athletics site.

Looks like Goan will give it a go. So much for what I was told. Awesome news.
