Offensive Line 2020/ Spring Review

Post by mpwerrell » Mon Mar 09, 2020 4:58 pm

There was a lot of concern about the OL last year. As a team UD averaged 156 yards per game rushing and 4.3 yards per rush. The biggest criticism was the 36 sacks given up over the 12 game season.
At the signing day event in February, Coach Rocco stated that in order to win a team needs talent, experience, and depth. He said that we had talent but not the other two qualities in 2019.
The O Line was a bit of an anomaly in that it did have players with experience.

Key returnees: one starter
David Kroll, sr
Mickey Henry, r-jr
Stevon Brown, r-so
Robert Nachtman, r-so
Owen Zechman, r-fr
Bradley Anyanwu, r-fr
Ryan Last, r-fr
Jaysen Ellison, r-jr walk-on

Key losses: four starters
Mario Farinella
Connor Lutz
Chukah Ezeuzoh
Jamil Gilmore
MJ Kehoe

Newcomers:
Ben Trent, gr
Patrick Shupp, fr
Braden Clark, fr
Lance Schwartz, fr
Brock Gingrich, fr

As far as I know none of the freshman are enrolled to participate in the spring. Not a lot of starting experience and one transfer from UVA. I'll be keeping my eye on the most important addition, Coach Stinespring, who will have a challenge ahead of him. Not only will Brown and Nachtman need to step up but the red shirt freshman will need to grow quickly and tremendously. The talent will need to overcome the lack of experience this year.
Waiting for an additional transfer(s) in the summer? We can hope...

We didn't have enough players on the OL Tuesday to field 2 teams . The freshmen and possible additional transfer will be welcome additions this summer. Owen Zechman, r freshman has left the team.

Ugh! Poor depth at OL already taking a hit. i hate to see scholly recipients leaving the program at any time , much less than before they even reach the field. :( Rocco needs to make recruiting highly FCS recruited OL and transfers a major priority for the 2021 class, and not just an afterthought as the 2020 recruiting class OL appear to largely be.
