Johnny Bush with a 105 yard INT at the vet against Temple. And the battle against Villanova's Mike Sienna (SP?)at the TUB. A little guy that put up big games against the best competition. The teams that were circled on our schedule back then.

Great memory. I was at that game at the old Temple field sitting in the rain and worrying that they were on their way (because of our tough losses in recant games) to a TD and then they would get the onside kick when Bush stepped in front of the receiver and was on his way. What that felt like was unbelievable. Beating Temple and Villanova back then was everything.

Recent UD teams can not sack the QB....

How about Joe Quigg had 16 sacks in one season

Then there was Jamie Bittner with 6 sacks in one game against Villanova. I think it was 6.

Roger Mason was spectacular against Temple with 45 rushing attempts.

Some names from the past. Really good players but fit into this topic well IMO.

Shannon Trostle was a great offensive guard too. Perfect for the wing-t and was tough as nails. He and Archibald were as solid as they come.

Sean Bleiler was one of my favorites. Played RB/TE and even some LB. Tough player and believe suffered some injuries that led to never really getting big recognition

Not sure if Lanue Johnson is considered underrated or not - might have been the best pass catching RB I have ever seen at UD, and was an incredible compliment to Brown in their years together. Together with Vergantino that was one heckuva loaded backfield for UD.

He didnt get the PUB he deserved IMO especially since he played with Daryl Brown who got most of it. His YPC were always some of the best and had a good number of TDs. o

I remember that Vollendorf was the starting guard on some really good teams. 5"10" and 190 pounds. He was so good at details. Of course back then blocking was done with the shoulders rather than hands and angle blocking was the key.

I remember the day Shetzler broke his leg, a compound fracture. Even after that I rode with him on a bus for army physicals. Neither of us passed.

Ron, I saw that compound fracture happen that day. I think it was versus Temple and I was not far from it. He was in real agony. When I was a freshman our starting OGs were 6-1,210 and 6-0, 197. My how times have changed.

I was there also. He later told me there was severe danger of infection because the bone made contact with the turf.. When you look back, so many memories with Temple and Villanova.

Do you remember the helmet swinging and pushing match as Delaware and Villanova left the field after a game? Conway Hamond and Ted Gregory. Back in those days Villanova had a reputation as a dirty team. Those two Hens became pros as did Mike Sienna (WR) from Villanova.

I do remember the helmet swinging. Hayman was really flailing his around. Lou Ferrys Villanova teams were always pushing the limits.
