Spring 2023 Positional Previews- Running Backs

Post by mpwerrell »

Who's Gone
Spruill

Who's Back
Cumby - S
Yarns - 2
Watson
Silver

Who's New
St. Fleur

Everybody is back except Khory Spruill. Will it be backfield by committee again or will one or two backs be featured? Marcus Yarns (481yds), Kyron Cumby (625 yds), and Quincy Watson (305 yds) all bring talent and experience to the table. Cumby has the flash, Watson has demonstrated his ability to run between the tackles (remember the Richmond game?), and Yarns is the closest to the best all-around game as he added 199 receiving yards.

Jo'Nathan Silver was supposed to contribute in 2022 according to Coach Pierce but got dinged up in summer camp and never got into the flow. What will the big back from New Jersey, Saeed St. Fleur, show us? This is another position on the team where talent and experience prevail. The only question remaining is, will the next Omar Cuff or Andrew Pierce be in this group?

A good situation to be in.

Well, we all know too well that these guys are good but they rely on the OL to open holes or at least tie up their man. The RBs will do very well if the OL just gives them some help. Was impressed at how hard Quincy Watson was running at the end of the season. Cumby and Yarns are a great tandem.

I thought Cumby was over-reliant on the "bounce" outside early in the season but did a little more straight line running as the season went on. He got better and better as the year went on and, with his speed, if he can hit a crease quickly, he can really cook in the second and third level. Although not big like Kory, Watson was very effective in short yardage situations. With the experience gained last year, i think we have the makings of a very solid running back group.

Every once in a while, GoHens is elevated to a better place.

The last two posts are a fantastic example of that. :D

Looks like UD is doing their own position previews. Were lucky enough to get both!

Not much meat in the UD position reviews. Just mentioning names. Maybe, in future reviews, we could learn about a new player that just arrived.
