NIT selection changes

Post by gonzo »

NIT Changes: https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-me ... ntal-rules

Starting in 2024, there will be changes to the NIT (National Invitation Tournament) selection process:

Conference regular season champions that don't win their conference tournament or aren't chosen for the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship won't get an automatic NIT bid. THIS SCREWS OVER MID MAJORS

Instead, the NIT will guarantee two teams from each of six conferences (ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, and SEC) based on their NET rankings. These will be the top two teams in NET rankings from each conference, even if they have a lower win-loss record.

These 12 automatically selected teams will have the chance to host a game in the NIT's first round.

After choosing these 12 teams, the NIT Committee will select the best 20 remaining teams to complete the 32-team tournament field.

The top four out of these 20 at-large teams will become the 16 first-round hosts, with a preference for teams that narrowly missed the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship.

Teams from the six conferences with automatic bids can also be selected as at-large teams and may have the opportunity to host games in the NIT.

Bad day for college hoops.

The fact that these basketball decision makers are shunning the mid major programs shows that all they care about is money. There are 358 D1 teams and when a select few who make the rules and decisions clearly only care about a select 100 or so of them it shows a clear and direct bias.

Gonzo,

Please don't tell me that you were naïve enough as some are on here that any changes would benefit UD??

Come on Man!!!!! You are smarter than that.

Other than that, I hope you are doing well.

Gotta love ya Pat! Appreciate the concern. I was expressing some thoughts about the basketball scene. It's evident that Delaware and many other mid-major programs are competing for limited attention compared to the prominent basketball programs. I'm fully aware that Delaware isn't the straw that stirs the drink of NCAA hoops.

Hope to catch a game in Newark this year but will definitely be at the Delaware Towson game down here in Maryland.
