Info…you are thinking of Chapel Street. That is where the siding is and where the turn off is positioned.
Academy runs next to Ivy Hall Apartments...a block down from South College.

You are correct, of course. Much better. I hope it can happen. Its a great idea to tie the campus together.

Re: 2024 Schedule
The bridge sounds pretty cool. Would probably have to get a huge chunk of federals funds/grants as UD and the state would not likely would fund this on their own for a nice to have rather than a necessity. Newark got federal funds for the pedestrian/bike bridge over White Clay Creek on Paper Mill Rd. It is very nice and a lot safer, especially for bikers. It was prefabbed and dropped into place in a few hours after several months of foundation work. Of course, the railroad tracks are a bigger span. Anyway, hope it happens. But I never thought the walk I made down South College to the stadium for decades from our family home on Kells Ave. was ugly.

Yep 79, all someone has to do at the Fed is go into the money computer and slide a few decimal points and magically the digital money exits…. The Gov can just electronically transfer money that doesn’t really exist to pay for these feel good projects. They really don’t have to print it anymore. In fact, that 34 trillion dollar debt doesn’t really matter at all, until it does.Hens79 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 20, 2024 8:32 am The bridge sounds pretty cool. Gotta’ love Carty. Enthusiastic. He brings some energy.
We get to plow through next year and enjoy 7 home games with the knowledge that we are moving up and leaving the little sisters of the world in the rear view mirror (for the most part…except for one FCS game per year).
Thank goodness.

Oh, one other thing that might help with student attendance...UD is looking into building a bike/pedestrian bridge over the RR tracks from Academy to the farm. Seems like a small thing, but students on East Campus (mostly freshmen...the ones you want to instill with excitement), and in the surrounding area houses and apartments, would have a shorter, more user-friendly path to get to the sports complex. It is currently an ugly walk along South College (UD is also thinking of planting more trees along the S. College road).
Good luck getting approval from the railroads on the pedestrian bridge...such a thing would require stopping train traffic for at least a day as the bridge is lowered into place (my guess is that it would be a pre-fab bridge...but man...that is a long span...it would be hard to stop train traffic for the multiple days it would require to build a normal bridge).
Anyway, hope springs eternal in our search to get more people to support our Hens.

Building another bridge to the south campus is not a new concept. This idea first surfaced more than ten years ago as a part of a development plan for the entire south campus, including BUILDING an entirely new stadium north of the current one. Obviously the stadium part of the idea is no longer relevant. If this bridge concept is on the table again, that's fine -- but hoping that shortening the walk for students and/or trying to beautify the walk for them will make them want to attend more games is a bit of a stretch IMHO.

It's not the Mandela effect, I hope, but I absolutely remember a print of a new South Campus layout where, as you mention, there was a whole new Delaware Stadium where the outdoor practice fields are now, and a large new pedestrian crossing of the train tracks extending down from Academy.

Re: 2024 Schedule
Info said he'd love to see the bridge plans. Right now, they probably involve a paper napkin and some stick figures.
As mentioned, UD has been talking about adding a bridge for some time...while also hoping the state would widen South College College (not going to happen). In fact, the train station rebuild was supposed to include a pedestrian bridge so that passengers could get to both sides of the tracks...that fell through for several reasons.
But, the bridge subject is back on the table again and there is an awful lot of free...er...money available and the grant writers based at UD are trying to scoop it all up and use it.
Nothing like using other people's money.
Speaking of which, the bicycle/pedestrian bridge near Timothy's (Paper Mill Road) was a hoot. Originally $1million...and was going to be paid for entirely with grants. As is usually the case, the $1 million ballooned to $1.4-1.5 million (some EPA issues and cost increases). The city of Newark was going to have to pay the difference. Half a million for a "nice to have" versus a "need to have."
Nope.
Boy...that thing was a pet project for a lot of folks (including the bike mafia). During the meeting where the vote would be held, some state reps gave some vague promises to help pay for the bridge, but no one actually stepped up with actual amounts...so, Council cancelled the bridge. "But...but...but...sunken costs, blah, blah, blah."
Everyone who wanted that expensive toy was shocked and upset.
So...within a few days, the vague promises were shored up into actual numbers as the reps went on record with their amounts and UD (shockingly) said they would contribute $100,000. Voila! Enough funds (the city paid about half of the increase). The project was approved in a special, hastily called "emergency" meeting. Later, the cost went up again, but another grant covered that additional part. Nice bridge...not used an enormous amount, but hey...mostly "other people's" money, but federal grants = taxpayer money.
UD is looking into getting a lot of grant money to build the RR bridge. Seeing as how they ponied up $100k for the Paper Mill Road bridge, perhaps they would spend a bit more of their own money for a bridge that (mainly) their students would use. The biking community would also like to see something other than the existing South College bridge. But, the cost is going to be much more than the Paper Mill bridge, and getting the railroads to cooperate (on anything) is a big obstacle.
Still, little things add up. If it helps get a few more folks into the stadium, yee-haw.

Re: 2024 Schedule
Glad the White Clay Bridge got done. And glad UD chipped in. Hope UD pulls off the Academy Street one to. Maybe our local State Reps can show them how it is done? And yeah, let’s use other people’s money aka get some of the extra back DE sends to the federal government. Delaware along with most of our mid-Atlantic and Northeast neighbors and the west coasters get back far less in federal spending than is sent to DC. So yeah, using other people’s money works for me. Other people in other parts of the country have been using our Delaware money long enough.
And yeah, every little bit helps getting students and fans to the stadium.

Re: 2024 Schedule
The state reps used local slush fund money...they were certainly not the brains behind the grants. City employees found the grant money. UD was coerced into helping with the bridge...plenty of story behind that, but it was good of them to show up and help the city.Hens79 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 2:42 pm Glad the White Clay Bridge got done. Since then, UD has been growing a small grant writing group...those individuals are pretty motivated and talented and do a good job of partnering with local cities/groups to double up/add on to state and local grants with additional federal aid. If they can find the funding, then it simply (Ha!) comes down to whether the railroad wants to let UD build a bridge. <<< THAT is the tough part. UD once tried to threaten Norfolk Southern with Eminent Domaine. Hoo-boy...that was one of the funniest step-on-a-rake moments in history.
Anyway, I hope it gets done.
