Re: Hens Offseason
He has been very successful bringing in good players. They just keep moving on to cash in.

Re: Hens Offseason
that's a fact Jack, but some coaches have succeeded in retaining enough of their good players to be quality teams. I realize the portal is a game changer. Might it be that when these good kids get here MI has not produced good enough teams to make them want to stay. That raises the question of how good a HC he is. As CSN&Y sang "It's been a long time coming".

The numbers are even higher now. It's happening everywhere. There are only 2 of the 15 All-CAA members returning next season: UNCW's Trazarien White and Charleston's Ante Brzovic. And Brzovic entered and tested the waters as well but chose to come back after Mack was hired. Charleston's NIL bank has the ability to give their top pieces as high as 6 figures to go there, which is absurd for a mid-major program. The entire conference will look very very new.

John Scheyer, head coach at Duke, has a two year record of 54-18. Seven scholarship players entered the portal this year along with 3 players who are either going to the NBA or ran out of eligibility. 2 players return.tenn hen wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2024 10:15 amthat's a fact Jack, but some coaches have succeeded in retaining enough of their good players to be quality teams. I know it’s Duke and UD but everything is relative in the transfer portal. Based on your premise above, it must raise a question of how good a HC is Scheyer. My point is that the portal has drastically changed the environment regarding player retention (ask Syracuse or numerous other teams).

Your comparing Duke(BIG time) to Delaware( small time) doesn't fit my premise. If you've read about the Blue Devils incoming class quality, that somewhat changes the equation. They can pick and choose so they will fill the void with some transfers as well. Scheyer? - well, not sure but he's doing fine so far. MI has lost not just the best he's successfully brought in, but many other average bb players who've sought greener pastures. IMO the large numbers leaving our program in the last few years are not just because of the portal. Our slower style of play has been unappealing and our reputation and rankings are not eye catching. Not looking to argue, but this trend won't change and is the basis for my being unsatisfied with the direction of our programs. I'm assuming that there will be no coaching changes which means we're putting off the inevitable(SOP) and has plagued us for so many years. Most of the most successful major sports programs have nationally recognizable coaches names who we associate with the school. For example,..... well, everybody knows all the names and schools who fit this bill. Remember our own Tubby, and even Brey

Re: Hens Offseason
Your theory is sort of blown up when you look at teams like Charleston (before Kelsey left) and Hofstra losing top players. Things seem pretty good at those places. It’s ok to admit it’s just the world of college sports now.tenn hen wrote: ↑Sat Apr 20, 2024 10:47 ammpwerrell wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2024 2:05 pmJohn Scheyer, head coach at Duke, has a two year record of 54-18. no- not "blown up" but reinforced by the success Kelsey HAD at Charleston! Even with the dangerous portal available to his kids, he retained a huge number of his players over the last 3 years and succeeded immensely with CAA season(2) and conference(2) championships. MI has won only 1 in 8 seasons and that was a hot classic tournament run. I'm truly happy our guys came through then, but it's not enough especially for that contract extension he was awarded
as to your second point- the reason many kids leave teams in the mid major specifically is that they want stronger competition(and money these days). Those reasons override any special loyalty to their coach or guys. Nelson and Davis might have remained had MI recruited a true BIG MAN. That recruiting mistake has devastated our chances of going further and making our squad more recognizable. We also probably should have scheduled several more quality teams so these guys would have received more exposure. The championship seasons might have followed. That's my opinion. feel to disagree.
as to your third point- We all know the portal has changes the scene of college ball. I don't have to "admit it"- I know it's a fact as does anyone who goes to ESPN.

Re: Hens Offseason
Nelson wasn’t staying. Money talks.
Glad you can admit it.

Re: Hens Offseason
Having a top notch big man would have made the season more successful which would have made Davis’ resume even better.
But he too was leaving as a graduate transfer.
Edit: Admit it.

Re: Hens Offseason
nope- reread my post. It's clearly explained- hint- add big man- uptempo game with his rebounds and voila -success- happy campers-retention

Re: Hens Offseason
Again, Charleston made the tournament and BEFORE Kelsey left, half the team was leaving. Davis was most likely headed out no matter what happened this season. Carr left after we won the CAA tournament two years ago. MI is far from perfect but not everything should be blamed on him. But you can believe what you want…
Re: Hens Offseason
Back to who is joining the program in here... Delaware has just received a commitment from Thomas Jefferson's Erik Timko. As a 6'5" wing, he shot over 40% from 3 in each of his three seasons at the D2 school. An Audubon, PA native... he has one year of eligibility remaining.
