Well let’s do some math.

85 full scholarships (assumption) minus 13 scholarship players in the portal (see Jaxhen’s count in The Hatchery under Portal Departures) equals 72.

72 minus 21 scholarship players without eligibility equals 51.

51 plus 19 incoming scholarship freshmen equals 70.

At this point, that leaves 15 scholarships to give to transfers (15 + 70 =85).

This is a fluid situation but, as of today, I think these numbers are close.

I like your math but keep in mind we may pick up a few more freshman in February.

Nobody should forget Keeler and Carty won a national championship at Sam Houston a few years ago and it was because those two did an outstanding job upgrading the talent on the roster. It took serious talent upgrades to be able to win that title. I don’t think he suddenly developed a case of dementia.. Carty has a good eye on talent. That was FCS but He gets it and was groomed under the King of the transfer

Also, with so many players coming back has to mean we’re just not going to see busloads of transfers. We already have “transfers” when our best players announce they are staying

The better FCS players are all getting P4 offers, G6 teams getting leap frogged by FCS players who are getting paid.. some of em will be paid to sit on a P4 bench. I don’t like it at all because nobody gets to watch them play

This part concerns me.

If your on the side of we need better Jimmies and Joes over continuity I can understand this point especially if you feel our guys aren't good enough.

I believe continuity and culture are important in building a program. 12 to 15 of the right transfers can make a huge inpact going forward. I wouldn't want to be in a situation where we were dependent on 30 plus transfers coming in to field a competent team.

Absolutely UDF, the player retention was the initial post season priority which will help UD get the best guys in the portal. I definitely feel like there’s a strategy in place and I’m willing to let it play out!

We need to improve our defense significantly to compete for a CUSA championship. Since the defense relies more on substituting players than the offense, we need to not only upgrade our first string players but also our depth. We need to build quality second team depth to play for four quarters but also to make it through a full season. Lots of improvement needed on defense to build consistency and avoid wearing down in the 4th quarter and later in the season. These rankings also highlight the passive style of our defense (most notably fumbles forced and recovered, opponent 3rd and 4th down conversion rates, scoring and total yardage defense, and red zone defense).

I agree Jax - UD is short of FBS talent at all three levels on defense. The D shined in a couple games last year but 100% agree if they want to compete for a CUSA title you need probably 6 or more studs to be infused. I’d go for two at each level- a DT, and edge, 1-2 LB’s and 2-3 guys that can cover.

I appreciate the shoutout for the recruiting updates on SSN Delaware. I have found this as probably the best way to update that account has now been transformed into the main page of Feathers and Field Goals moving forward as we are now becoming our own independent media outlet covering all UD Athletics. I don’t know where CUSA stands currently but the NCAA allows 105 scholarships now

bluehenbillk, I thought that all or maybe mostly all FBS programs were sticking with a max of 85 schollies at least for the present. Do you know of any FBS programs that have actaully went to 105 schollies and/or at least significantly above 85 schollies?
