Our Local Paper: Hens Coverage

Post by UD '01 grad »

Reason No. XXXXX why local news is heading to Boot Hill.

The following paragraph is from The News Journal's newly launched weekly sports newsletter, authored by Greg Giesen (title: Sports Strategist for Delaware Online).

The Blue Hens open the season tonight as well and Kevin has made a number of treks down to Dover to watch the Blue Hens’ practices and prepare for the season.

Does anybody look at this stuff? Does anyone care?

No, it doesn't impact anything in real life. Just credibility, precision, etc. and causes more eye rolls among the readers who remain.

A shame.

I have subscribed to the NewsJournal for years, but I just cancelled. They raised the monthly rate from 15 to 20 dollars a month. I like to support local journalism, but paying that much for a lot of recycled content is too much for me. The Wall Street Journal and New York Times is substantially less than that.

I guess they don’t proof the strategist.

Gannett makes it hard to love the NewsJournal.

I still subscribe to the electronic edition because it's cheap and offers a value I think's worth it, even with the minimal local news it still offers.

Solving the crisis in print media isn't brain surgery; it's simply back to the future. Hire local agents to cover local and state news, events, and sports, and let the national media cover news outside the state and region. I mean don't even attempt to cover national news unless it has a local or state angle. This is the content most subscribers desire. And, for God's sake, hire proofers.

Guys...c'mon.

You're arguing against a professional Sports Strategist who gets PAID for doing his job. Who are we, amateurs at best, to question such an accredited prosaist? The media is always correct...especially the big guys such as Gannett.

Easy explanation: Kevin has been going down to Dover to watch our Blue Hen practices because Dover is our state's capital...and it has an Air Force base. Get it? Drones. Kevin is using high quality, precision drones launched from Dover to make his practice observations...and The News Journal is in on it. Thus, the need for a Sports STRATEGIST. And the subscription price? Well, those drones don't pay for themselves.

Pretty obvious, really.

Frankly, I'm a little jealous. Porta-Potty Reporting was looking into using drones, but we can't find any that can safely be launched from our platforms...seems there is an ever-so-slight chance that the methane emissions could be ignited by the drone's electronics.

I couldn’t agree with you gentlemen more regarding Delawareonline’s new Sports Strategist’s faux pas.

But I want to give a shout out for Kevin Tresolini who has written 18 articles about Blue Hen football between July 27 and this morning.

Under very restrictive conditions, (he is only able to attend 2 practices per week for the first 45 minutes and specific interviews with players need to be pre-approved 24 hours in advance of the interview), he has done an admirable job providing information about the team’s progress.

Amen to this. He's been frustrated beyond words for how his access has been restricted and at times how it's communicated. It's a shame a guy covering the team for over 30 years can't have the respect he deserves which would translate to much more coverage for the Fans.

Agree John. KT has been excellent this pre season as usual and shame on UD for the restrictions they’ve had.

Post was in no way talking about KT. Hopefully everyone knows that.

Just a frustrated observation as I used to be one of those proofers mentioned above until it was determined my services were no longer necessary.

Was fortunate to be able to land on my feet (coincidentally today is my eight-year anniversary at my subsequent job) but others that have endured that may not have been as lucky.

More info: I also used to hold the managing sports editor title at the Review that our friend Dan does today. The Review has not been immune from the changes in the journalistic world (we were a twice-a-week broadsheet when I was there) but I know those that are part of it today are doing the best they can with what they have to work with.

Safe travels to all those on the bus and/or heading up to NY (which includes my father-in-law). Bring home a win.

No wonder you do such a great job with the numbers! :D Many thanks for your efforts, too!

BTW, you were very clear with your post (as usual). The only person who would think you were talking about KT would be someone with as much reading comprehension as a person who would confuse Dover with Newark.

I feel KT's pain every day when I search online for his latest FOOTBALL article. I agree with all of you who have become disillusioned with RC's attendance policies :P They are ridiculous considering the object of our football program is to provide our community(students?, alumni, and locals) a positive, engaging experience. The result is increased ticket sales and increasing funding for our entire athletic budget/sports teams.

I'm approaching tonight's game with a solid general understanding of our talent level but no real feel for how that is translating going into this season. I've wanted to see and hear the players commenting during camp- forget about it. I have been able to view and hear from our coaches with their general comments quite regularly but that's just the usual coach speak. I find it incomprehensible not to have been provided loads of videos from practices- at least the drills in order to gain some feeling for the individual players conditioning, speed, reactions, etc). Last season's Hudl or Rivals videos of transfers and freshmen recruits don't provide enough.

Frankly, all the videos we've been provided over the years from UD have allowed me to do my homework- familiarize myself with the #'s and names- and be prepared to evaluate our guys performances. I expect to be be clicking AFAP between flo sports and out gohens depth chart close to every play. Additionally I need a window for the entire UD roster to see the STs guys. I don't give a hoot about SB's #'s. I'll just get a feel for their team's overall play.

I sure as heck don't( never have) and won't do replays after the game. There is too much great football on the tube to keep my remote working full time all Saturday. EVEN have the LSU game Sunday night!

So-- about 3 and a half hours till kickoff. 9 months have passed and I'm looking forward to viewing the NEW BABY that has been born in Newark- I'm "keeping the faith"
Keep the faith kick butt go Hens

I did not take your post as a slight towards KT. I was just taking advantage of the thread about local paper coverage to give kudos to Tres for the coverage he provides.

And I’m sure Mr. Cluck was not referring to me with his reading comprehension comment🫢

Definitely not. You have been a reasonable poster that has provided good information for GoHens readers. 👍
