Well ok, I might have gotten ahead of myself on Liberty
45-6 would confirm that. CUSA is not ready for prime time against P4 (or is it P5?) teams and they were the top of CUSA. Yet when watching the CUSA championship game I came to the conclusion that either team would have cleaned UD's clock. PS: I watched as many of the FCS playoff games as I could and concluded Delaware was not even close to almost all of them.
I watched as many as I could as well and I’ll give you maybe the top 8, but outside that I completely disagree.
I suggest you add at least 2 to that list- Nova and Albany (yeah I know they go smoked in their last playoff game but given their CAA performance for the season a game with them would likely have ended up a lot like our Nova game).

Yes, they’re both top 8. I’d add a 9th that wasn’t top 8 which is North Dakota State. Outside of that, I didn’t see really any team where I could say they were for sure better than UD.

Me too. Liberty is very good and could play with a lot of P4/5 teams. Oregon is a great team and definitely a top 8 team with one of the most dynamic offenses in the country. They were a play or two from beating Washington twice who is playing in the championship game. The game I think was more how good Oregon was rather than Liberty not being very good. That isn’t how I felt after the Hens PSU beat down.

Delaware not even close to almost all?

Bobby, I guess you were watching The Dakota and Montana games.

I would say 10 or so are better, anything between 8 to 14 but certainly not almost all

These were the playoff teams

Drake
NC Central
Austin Peay
Nicholls
North Dakota
South Dakota
Idaho
Sacramento State
Richmond
Villanova
Lafayette
Albany
Furman
Chattanooga
Mercer
Montana
Montana State
North Dakota State
Southern Illinois
Gardner Webb
Duquesne
Youngstown St
South Dakota State

We can disagree about the actual number but at least 10 of them are way ahead of Delaware. I'm guilty of some hyperbole in the previous post. Remember that #5 ranking we had until late in thee season? It was absolute baloney. The Nova game showed how far off we were in the CAA alone. Albany would have done the same thing to us as Nova did. We were closer to Elon (and they did not make the playoffs). Hard to say how far down the MV or Big Sky the teams would have out-classed us (some obviously did not make the playoffs). I would have put us between #15 and #20. I think we matched closer to Lafayette. In any event we did not dominate our conference and how many teams in other conferences (outside MV or Big Sky) were way better is indeed more difficult to say. Suffice it to say we were way behind those 10 teams.

Liberty star QB entered the portal today. The downside of G5 football in a NIL world.

This is why I chuckle every time somebody laments how long it will take Delaware to build a competitive FBS roster when we were a fair-to-middling CAA team. The only certainty in college football right now is uncertainty. Every team's roster can be completely wrecked and rebuilt in a flash. If you have an opening, go out and fill it. There's no excuse to have multi-year deficits at certain positions or units. There are literally hundreds of proven players who have publicly declared their readiness and willingness to come play for you. The best are going to go to the highest NIL bidder, and you'll just have to backfill behind them.

Has Las Vegas or some online book made over/under yet on when the first NIL - Betting scandal breaks? It’s not a question of if. Only when.

This NIL stuff is the Wild West right now. A cousin of one my son’s friends is a starting TE for an ACC school. He put his name in the portal and within a couple of days their NIL collective provided him with $200,000 and a brand new truck. He didn’t transfer.

After taxes and the cost of an accountant…

The players aren’t classified as employees, so would they be independent contractors? That would mean Soc Security, self-employment taxes…and DE probably adds an unemployment fee/tax as well. And their scholarships…also considered income? Gotta’ pay taxes on the retail value of that truck.

The tax man cometh. 😂

Perhaps the NIL people break it down as multiple gifts each at the non-taxable limit ($17k+ this year) instead of one lump sum?

With some players getting 7-figures…maybe the NIL orgs just pass the money through some shell companies and the IRS will just ignore it all.

As jd said, there will be some shady dealings coming out of this. There always have been…but things might get turbo charged.

Wild West, indeed.

Resource rich Collectives could cover the taxes as well for the players. However I doubt any of these could be considered gifts. I think gifts subject to that $17,000 annual limit have to come from an individual not a corporate entity.

What I’m saying is chances are if UD has a CUSA offensive or defensive POY they wouldn’t be able to compete with P2 NIL offers.

For his sake, the kid's new team hopefully will have missed watching the Oregon game.

C'mon, Bill...it is only Jan 3...don't lose your sense of humor or perspective this early in the year.

That was bait for one of our other posters...the guy always demanding that we recruit better QBs...he seems to be blissfully unaware that any great QB will be gone as soon as he proves himself. Porter Chevy isn't offering up any new trucks full of money to our kids.

As I posted earlier...we should be happy that the portal didn't come much earlier. Gannon, Komlo, Flacco, Devlin...heck, ALL of them would have bailed on our Hens. Ditto the RBs and the rest of our greats.
