UD to CUSA

Post by bluehenbillk »

Sources: Conference USA is expected to Delaware as a new member for the 2025-26 season. The sides have been in talks and a decision is expected to be formalized in the upcoming days.

Per Pete Thamel / ESPN on twitter.

This would eliminate UD from CAA tourney play
UD to FBS. I never thought I’d see the day

25-26 season. I wonder what this does to UD hoops for this year and next. Would be really bad to have 2 years of not being eligible and might trigger a mass transfer with players getting special waivers.

That timing would certainly align to what my UD source told me a week or so ago. Can’t happen soon enough!!!

Per Brett McMurphy of the Action Network

Delaware would be 1st FCS school required to pay $5 million application fee to move up to FBS (previously was $5,000)

Well, after seeing teams in the Conf-USA, I may have to temper my excitement. I just can’t see natural rivalries being developed with New Mexico State, Sam Houston State, or Jacksonville St.! Why didn’t we go after a more local conference like the Atlantic 10? SMH

Probably. Not good news for any team trying to win in the short term. Hard to recruit until 2027 cycle and high risk to lose current players ( and coaches?)

Football drives the bus. This was purely a football move to go to a FBS conference and the A10 doesn't have football.

There are plenty of teams that play basketball in the A-10 and play football in FBS. It can be done. I feel basketball is always the stepchild at UD.

The ESPN story from Thamel says that UD basketball would be eligible for the postseason in both 2023-24 and 2024-25 after a recent bylaw change in the CAA. Does that mean UD can play in the CAA tourney during some or all of this transition?

The NCAA would have nothing to say on this. We are already D1.

It is up to the CAA, and Chrissi already worked that out.

She is two to three steps ahead on this.

Ugh. I hate to have to pay $5 mill for this but UD must have it. I hope the payback is quick. How does the NCAA justify this? It certainly doesn't cost them much to allow this.

A10 is basketball first…look at all recent additions. They don’t want a basketball program that’s 2nd fiddle to FB.

Secondly, I doubt CONF USA would have taken IUD as football only
