So, if football separates, then what happens to the other sports?

Does anyone actually think the men’s basketball players would not want to be paid similarly to the football players? And what happens to women’s basketball if the men get paid? Will other players from other sports sue to get a part of the revenue (why shouldn’t lacrosse players get paid…can’t say it is because of popularity as those lacrosse attendance numbers rivaled some women’s b-ball attendance)?

Separating football seems like a good idea if one is looking at it from a football only perspective…and not a collegiate sports perspective. It is going to be hard to separate professionally paid STUDENT athletes from the other STUDENT athletes. Will the Stanfords and Virginias of the world actually admit that their football team is not about STUDENT athletes?

It is going to get very messy.

Well Kelly is talking about paying the players out of the television contracts for football, so I'd imagine no other athlete would have a legal ground to stand on to sue. and part of what he said was that Football would be national like the NFL with a commissioner and play 7 regional games and 4 against another region and one of their choice....the remaining sports would remain affiliated as they have been (i.e.- pac 12, sec, Big 10, acc, etc...) the monkey in the wrench is Basketball and preserving the crown jewel of the NCAA tournament etc....I'd argue that NCAA basketball is nowhere near as popular as NCAA football though....

I will never believe that the NCAA will do what makes sense in the short term, but eventually Chip Kelly has nailed where college football will end up. I might not live to see it, but IMO the NCAA will have to end up here. https://www.espn.com/video/clip/_/id/39132310

I would say yes; their share of the health insurance, deductible, co-pays and all that fun stuff. If the health provider approves the needed surgery of course. And his scholarship would be taxable too. Be careful what you wish for.

This guy's well behind the times. This has been happening for many, many years at the FCS to FBS level. Nothing new under the sun. Most FCS schools pay their HCs peanuts, comparably speaking. Coaches are going to continue chasing the money and opportunities. Loyalty's a completely dead concept in the coaching ranks, and why shouldn't it be? It sure is at many D-I universities. Take the Keeler firing, for example...

I think he covered your basic point in his post, but he went on to say what would be considered a head scratcher in the past would just be normal going forward … just another day

The Mercer coach bolting for Navy was a head scratcher for those Southern Conference fans and he’s basically saying the FCS coaching carousel is going to get even worse

I “heard” the 5 Million dollar fee to get into FBS was partly put in place to control the whispers of a mutiny so to speak, like too many FCS schools expressing interest in going FBS and somebody at the NCAA thinks FBS has enough teams right now.. Not enough room at the Inn

Carib, since you’ve posted this, both the South Alabama and now reportedly Buffalo head coaches have resigned for positions on the Alabama staff.

I would say yes; their share of the health insurance, deductible, co-pays and all that fun stuff. If the health provider approves the needed surgery of course. And his scholarship would be taxable too. Be careful what you wish for.

I recommend every young person save money in a tax deferred 401K plan as well. Do they have to have approved I-9 forms too?

Speaking of schedules and other things related to UD football, The Stone Balloon Ale House on Main Street has closed its doors.

Frankly, I thought that for a while they had a pretty decent upscale pub menu and some fun, creative food/drink specials. It was a great atmosphere...they had the names of the bands that played at the Stone Balloon on a large wall (a very impressive list) and had kept a lot of the original "stone" appeal (I have two of the stones from the old building).

Plenty of UD football players bounced at the old Balloon, and many of today's students worked there (a different place, but the owners paid homage to the old Balloon).

Damned shame. As the prices of ingredients rose, I noticed their specials were starting to get a bit more blah yet more expensive. Bummer...was looking forward to going there as part of our reintroduction to the outside world.

Another day, another memory erased.

That’s interesting Coach, … Buffalo is no place to be. The Chatty fan also included this in his post

That assistant coaches at FBS schools make more money than most head coaches at FCS schools, especially lowly ones like Mercer and the schools that make up the SOCON? Pretty elemental stuff.
