Baseball 2021

The roster for the 2021 season is on the UD website. Looks like John Marti and Chance DiFebbo are not returning for their redshirt senior years. Marti had a very short stint here after transferring in from Lafayette, where he lead the Patriot League in league batting average.

Why is Aidan Riley no longer on the roster? He was voted a freshman All American after the shortened last season and was described by Sherman when he came to UD as one the best hitters he has recruited here in the last 15 plus years. W

Jad Prachniak, who led West Chester to two D2 World Series titles resigned and has become an assistant coach here at UD.

+1 Not showing yet on bluehens.com. Is Prachniak an additional assistant? That would appear to be unlikely since Baseball had to let an assistant go due to UD's budget cuts. How will Prachniak's arrival affect long time Assisrant Coach Dan Hammer? If Prachniak is at UD under a plan to succeed Sherm, it better happen by NLT the end of the 2021 or (and waiting even thsi long would be risky) 2022 seasons. Otherwise, some other Div I program is going to make Prachniak their HC. Prachniak had a lot of success as a pitching coach and in charge of recruiting at Wm & Mary before taking the WCU HC job.

Good kid - hard worker. Sits mid 90’s can touch higher. Followed his old HC from West Chester to Newark.

He originally started at VCU and then transferred to WCU. WCU cancelled its spring season so some players are transferring out.

Had heard rumors but nice to see it announced. Austin Elliot from Cape will be joining the Hens. Transfer from UNC who will have 4 years of eligibility. Made a few appearances out of the UNC pen last year. Really good outfielder too. Will be a nice arm as I hear we’ll be missing a pretty significant arm.

That Cape team was loaded. Zach Gelof who is a first team pre season all American at Virginia this year, his brother Jake who is now at UVA as well, David Erickson and Mason Fluharty who are at Liberty, and Elliot.

Sorry to hear the team has already lost one of the significant pitchers. Hopefully the transfer pitchers from Wale Forest, West Chester, and NC, along with Greenly from UVA last year, will make up for the loss. And when will the schedule come out? It’s already mid-January.

If you’re referring to the Wake transfer, he’s not a transfer. Reichold was originally committed to Wake but backed off of it and is now at UD. Similar to Wyatt Nelson. Was committed to Missouri and I believe had even signed with them but is now at UD as well.

Hens will have some arms but will be young in that department. None of the starters got off to good starts last year so I’d imagine the weekend rotation is wide open. I’d imagine Ludman will start out as the ace. Silan needs to take the next step in his development. Bolten is a tall, lanky lefty with good potential but still needs some time to develop. Will be interesting to see if Velazquez challenges for a weekend spot as well. He stayed with UD even when the big boys came calling.

It appears they’ve lost Harris and Pomatto as they aren’t on the roster. Unfortunately Greenly is the arm I’ve heard is out.

Only a handful of D1 programs have released a full schedule. The SEC announced their conference schedule yesterday, but most schools stated in the release that non conference schedules would be released later. With the season scheduled to start in a few weeks, I imagine that the majority of OOC schedules will be a play it by ear situation and pretty fluid. The Big 10 announcing that they will only play a conference schedule threw a lot of teams for a loop. Most early season tournaments were cancelled as well, as most northern teams aren’t getting on planes. The schedule board for D1 coaches is littered with coaches saying they have open dates and looking to find teams to play.

While the weather sucks, the good thing about being in the Mid Atlantic is there are tons of schools within the 5 hour driving radius in case a mid week game or even series gets cancelled that you can literally put together a day before. And while baseball should be played on dirt and grass, this is another situation in which it makes 1000% sense for UD to have a turf field.

UNCW is the only CAA team that has a baseball schedule on the CAA website, and it includes both both conference and non-conference games. Delaware is not on the UNCW schedule.
