Our Punt Team

Post by Heeper » Sat Oct 09, 2021 4:04 pm

I think every person on this board would say our punt team protection has been an issue all year yet we haven't changed a thing and today it cost us a game. Why in the world would we keep our super wide splits when we are punting inside the 50 yard line?? Wide splits help protect against the return which there isn't going to be one - it will be a fair catch or touchback no wide splits needed. Tighten the splits and don't let a free rusher at your punter.

It's absolutely mind boggling to me that we wouldn't make an adjustment there. But then again, as far as we know, we don't have a specific coach assigned to special teams. Anybody else see that as a problem?

Don’t know if we have a special teams coordinator but if we do he should not be allowed back in the bus when they leave the stadium.

First of all, they shouldn't have punted to begin with. Run for 3 or 4 on 3rd and go for it! Cripes...

Agree, by not being aggressive on the road and using the two available downs to try for the first down, the coaches clearly demonstrated they were playing for OT at that point and not for a win in regulation. It bit them in the butt and not fixing the now two season-long blocked punt issue is simply unexplainable. Credit the players tenacity, they never gave up and came within a snatched 50/50 ball interception of tying the game at the end. So many close calls that could have been big plays that went the other way today and cost the game. Time to regroup for next week.

I totally agree about having two downs to get four yards. To play winning football, you go for it and get it. That basically wins the game. Bottom line.

As for the punt team, it's beyond comprehension that the highest compensated coaching staff in the division continues to allow this to happen. This is the kind of thing that should warrant a pink slip.

Henny, agree with all. But not going for it is who Rocco is. It just is. And the punt team? It finally cost the Hens a game. Don’t need to watch game films to see this stuff. Just like you don’t with Gwynn.

Rocco should be coaching to keep his job going forward. Doubtful that will change how he does thing but who knows.

As far as I am concerned this loss is 100% on Rocco for not fixing our punt blocking scheme. He is one stubborn man. 1,000 pounds of blockers can't block one man. He is who he is and don't look for any changes in what he does.

One of the most accurate recent statements on the Board.

Yep! And along that same theme, don’t expect Pribula to get a snap this year. It’s the old definition of insanity.

This is the same coach who went with Joe Walker after two years of one of the worst passing attacks in the nation. Change is hard.

If multiple blocked punts don't make this HC want to change things up, what will??

The punt "protection" or whatever they call it, is in a word pitiful.

Truth.

Stubborn. A word mentioned by several on here...because it is accurate.

The punter also needs some awareness. He was like 1 yard from the blockers when he tried to punt it. You re on the 45... Even just a little sidewinder gets j
inside the 20. What a dumb call on 3rd and 4th down.
