Defense Against the Run!

Post by RamblinRec » Sun Oct 10, 2021 9:28 am

Another problem I am seeing with our defense has to be with our LB getting tied up against the run. With a three man front on run downs, they have difficulty getting off the blocks of the OL quick enough to prevent substantial gains especially when the OL is in power blocking mode. I think they should consider on run downs putting someone like Colby in DE position with his hand in the dirt. This would allow more opportunity for the LB's to read and react against the run!

No no no! Rush 3 drop everyone else back into soft coverage! It's a time tested method that gets you into the playoffs every other year without ever actually contending for a championship! We're just like a less exciting version of UNH now!!!

Also, the lack of sacks has been an issue for awhile. Here is where we stand in the CAA (12 teams) in that category since 2017:

2017 - 11th
2018 - 11th
2019 - 12th
2021 (spring) - 2nd
2021 (fall) - 11th

Is it personnel or scheme? We essentially have the same personnel we did in the spring yet look at the difference in where we rank (spring versus fall). We seem to have reverted back to a very passive defensive scheme.

Thanks...very telling stats.

If that doesn't convince people that the 2021 Spring Season was a statistical outlier, I don't know what will. Delaware is the same team it was in 2019.

IF those results follow through with the remaining 6 games, then I will certainly agree that little to no progress has been made. I just refuse to write the season off like that, with more than half the season remaining.

Well, we will beat Stony (can't wait for someone to try to convince us they are a good team). 4-2

JMU looks like a loss. 4-3

Dixie is a W. 5-3

W&M is not a top 20 team. We could win that game. 6-3

The Spiders are also not a top team. We have a chance. 7-3

Nova will most likely beat us. 7-4

As someone else posted...does that thrill anyone?

Ever heard of "one at a time"?

I can say, I'm not thrilled so far. I also don't think anybody inside or outside of the program is thrilled . Obviously.

I would agree with everything you said but we haven’t made playoffs every year and won’t be this year either

Combine the retreat and cover Defense with the ole 1974 Ford Pinto clunker offense and you have the perfect formula for losing football

Only a really bad team like Stony Brook can save us but that’s not a given at this point
recruiting recruiting recruiting...It ain't rocket science....We need better more athletic players...That simple....

I think most of our expressed observations are in agreement. While I hate the style of play our HC stubbornly adheres to, I do think we have a team loaded with talented, skilled players who when allowed to play more aggressively, expect to win games. What happened to our defense? The absence of one player does not explain the 180 negative turn-around there. Passive play will not win championships. We all know that. Why, after consecutive years of poor OL play, especially with pass protection, can’t that be fixed? Why, with 7 QBs on the roster, do we not have the next quality starter ready to seamlessly step up? Why, with our punt team issues repeatedly laid bare during the Spring season, not been “evaluated” and fixed? Those answers all lay at the feet of this coaching staff.

I hate the 3 man DL scheme. UD needs to go with a 4 man DL.
