Sack Statistics

Post by Jaxhen1 » Mon Oct 11, 2021 11:03 pm

I posted this in another thread and added some more details. I also included the sack statistics for Richmond during the years 2012 through 2016 under Coach Rocco’s tenure:

Here is where UD stands in sacks in the CAA (12 teams) since 2017:

2017 - 11th (18 in 11 games, 1.64 per game)
2018 - 11th (16 in 12 games, 1.33 per game)
2019 - 12th (6 in 12 games, 0.5 per game)
2021 (spring) - 2nd (17 in 8 games, 2.13 per game)
2021 (fall) - 11th (7 in 5 games, 1.4 per game)

Is it personnel or scheme? We essentially have the same personnel we did in the spring yet look at the difference in where we rank (spring versus fall). We seem to have reverted back to a very passive defensive scheme.

Now, let’s look at Richmond’s sack statistics from 2012 through 2016:

2012 - 8th (15 in 11 games, 1.36 per game)
2013 - 9th (21 in 12 games, 1.75 per game)
2014 - 10th (24 in 14 games, 1.71 per game)
2015 - 11th (16 in 14 games, 1.14 per game)
2016 - 5th (23 in 14 games, 1.64 per game)

Average sacks per game for UD from 2017 through 2021 is 1.33 per game.

Average sacks per game for Richmond from 2012 through 2016 is 1.52 per game.

Richmond didn’t fare much better than UD in the sacks category under Coach Rocco. I fear that this essentially reflects his overall schematic and conservative defensive philosophy.

Jaxhen1, thanks for doing the research.

The info hits everyone right between the eyes, doesn't it? No room for misinterpretation.

Rocco is Rocco. It is all by design.

That 2017 defense had 3 current NFL starters!

To be fair, I suppose one could make the argument that the scoring defense statistics during those years were more favorable and justify the more conservative philosophical approach. I still prefer the more aggressive approach of the 2021 spring season.

UD (2017 through 2021)

2017 - 3rd (16.8 per game)
2018 - 3rd (21.5 per game)
2019 - 10th (28.7 per game)
2021 (spring) - 1st (14.4 per game)
2021 (fall) - 6th (23.2 per game)

Richmond (2012 through 2016)

2012 - 4th (21.5 per game)
2013 - 6th (23.8 per game)
2014 - 7th (25.4 per game)
2015 - 8th (24.6 per game)
2016 - 5th (23.4 per game)

With this realization, I would almost ask Brandon to coach the team.
