Hopkins scrimmage

Post by LILax »

I was not down at Homewood this weekend but got some feedback from my brother who was there and I also watched the highlights posted on the Hopkins thread: https://youtu.be/AUCFbBxKXuU?si=SkPXql2bJOZ5YgDK

Top takeaways:

DeLuca has a ton of options at attack and looked like he primarily played John McCurry (1 goal), Freshman Bennett Parmer (2 goals) at X and lefty Powers (2 goals), who also played midfield. He also had Yale transfer Cory Capri at the righty spot on attack when McCurry was out. Overall, the group looked good and were pretty fluid overall switching with inverted middies throughout the game.

First midfield was Jason Kolar (1 goal) who looks fully recovered from last year when he missed all but the first 4 games, Tyler Owings and Ryder Villani. Merrimack transfer Jack Kolbe (1 goal) ran with Hank D'Ambrogi (1 Goal) and Brendan Powers. Lots of lefties. Kolbe looked good on a couple nice shots from outside. The only other goal came from soph Ethan Kraus (man-up) when the Hens sent in back-ups for the entire 4th qtr.

On close defense the Hens were missing two starters Matt Montgomery and Louie Atkinson (who also missed the alumni game last week). Hopefully they are both back in the spring. That is a lot of experience missing. In their place DeLuca started freshman Liam Powell (Loyola Blakefield), Nick Cowan and Patrick Gillin (who I believe will move back to LSM in the spring).

OJ Morris did well at faceoff with Rowen Marsell (LSM) and SSDM Ryder Buell on the wings. Freshman SSDM Nathan Ferguson (Landon) subbed in on defense. OJ also had York transfer Jackson Shields and Owen Black on the wings. Black was playing LSM for the first time that I have seen. Surprised that we didn's see Ohio State transfer Aiden Bodonyi at LSM, but I imagine he must have been part of the walking wounded.

The Hens were outscored 5-1 in the fourth quarter when DeLuca put in freshman Colton Silverstein in goal along with close defense of freshman Lange Gaspar (Calvert Hall), Gino Pisano and freshman Michael Dickinson-Tooman along with sophomore LSM Wells Bergstrom and SSDMs Eli Rippey and freshman Duncan Barnes (Boys Latin).

Hens are a very young team. It'll be interesting to see how they come together this year with so many freshman and sophs expected to contribute. Should be fun.

Here is some more field-level video from Inside Lacrosse if you are interested.

I saw freshman Bennett Parmer play a couple games in high school. He might be a hidden gem that the Hens found in Manheim, PA. Former hometown of Hens Legendary QB Matt Nagy for those who follow that sport.

LILax, thanks for your report. As you say, the season should be interesting with all the young blood on the team.

So, UD led 8 - 7 at the end of Q3 before inserting all the youngsters. Sounds promising.

As far as the Hens re-tooling, Inside Lacrosse, Dan Aburn listed Delaware in his top 12 takeaways from Fall Ball.

Delaware has serious young guns "Some of the best players in Delaware program history have come and gone in the past two years, so there’s plenty of opportunity for youngsters to emerge for the Blue Hens. Several made quite the impact in a fall scrimmage against Johns Hopkins. Freshman Bennett Parmer got the start at attack and finished with two goals. Sophomores Ryder Villani and Tyler Owings anchored senior Jason Kolar on the first midfield line. Sophomore Owen Black had a fantastic outing scooping groundballs, while Sophomore Ryder Buell and freshman Nathan Ferguson got significant shifts at SSDM. Freshman Liam Powell started on close defense while freshman goalie Colton Silverstein impressed when subbed in during the fourth quarter."

This youth movement might not provide immediate benefits, but the Hens will be loaded for bear in their opening season next year in the A10 with another stellar class coming in next year including IL top 50 player Matt Trolio from Strong Island. We shall see.

Nice! Already looking forward to spring (and it’s not because of cold weather :) ). One more CAA season then on to the A10.

Two recent articles at bluehens.com about 2025 UD Men's Lax -

https://bluehens.com/news/2024/11/1/men ... 5-captains

https://bluehens.com/news/2024/10/30/me ... -newcomers

Good news about Jason Kolar and Logan Premtaj in first article.

Second article seems to indicate that UD landed a pretty good class of transfers and incoming Freshmen. I am disappointed that there does not appear to be any Canadians among the newcomers.
