Tubby's Nightmare Comes True

Post by InvestedHenFan »

It was 1997 and Tubby shared with Ted Kempski he had a nightmare that David Roselle shared with him that his new conference alignment would be announced and that the conference is :

Delaware
FIU
Jax State
Kennesaw State
Liberty
LA Tech
Missouri State
MTSU
NM State
Sam Houston
UTEP
WKU

So he called his good friend Andy Talley who thank god put his mind at rest and confirmed everything was ok and shared with him the real conference:

Delaware
Army
Villanova
William & Mary
Richmond
Lehigh
Lafayette
Holy Cross
Colgate
Bucknell
Fordham
Georgetown

The nightmare ended when Tubby called the UD president and was told there was no president and then he called back the AD and the AD was gone too.

I'd bet the large majority of coaches from that era wouldn't be overly thrilled with what college football has become. It's changed and everyone has to adapt. Can't live in the past. I'm happy we're not stuck in whatever the CAA is now, or even worse dropping to D3 like former yearly rival St Francis.

You got that right. Dave Nelson, too. Especially since the Patriot League always rebuffed UD's interest in membership there, purportedly because of its "state school" status, even though Dave Nelson was one of those who helped organize the effort to create that league back in the day. And now that is W&M's new home (with the same state school status as UD) and UD will be playing conference games thousands of miles away from home. Who would have thought? Crazy times make for strange bedfellows.

Harold made rather disparaging comments about the Patriot League towards the end of his tenure. He would have not enjoyed the CAA competition at the end or the depths the program had descended under past administrations, I'm fairly certain.

College football's changed so much since HRR left Delaware. He wouldn't likely be able to tolerate today's D-I environment, for better and for worse. Also, I'm not sure many schools would have the patience to keep a coach who hadn't won a championship in a couple decades. There's not much loyalty or patience on either side; it's all about money and winning big right now. It's a completely different world.

I'm just happy I have memories of the good days of college football. This new era is just plain silly now, but I am glad UD is evolving and not being left behind. The CAA is dead.

It sucks, but it is what it is. I'll take C-USA over the Patriot League any day of the week. It'll go back to a new normal when the P4 breaks off and does their own thing. It just makes sense for the rest of the sundry items to realign and create more regional leagues. Or at least that's what I hope happens.

as many here have posted- it is what it is- move on and adapt- no excuse- make things happen! As a former coach, you work and use your ability to change the equation. I must admit that money wasn't involved in my efforts, but scholarships were(college) as well as upping the chance for hs kids to have a better chance for receiving college offers.

We have an awesome set of schedules for our football program-kudos there- so it's up to the coaching staff to bring in good players and mold them these guys into quality team with success. That will exponentially open opportunities for making a name again for Delaware football. The same applies to bball. It will not be an easy or overnight. I've been waiting since I graduated 58 years ago to see us realistically relevant- consistently top 75!

Ralph - agreed. Been saying something similar for a number of years now. I just hope it happens sooner rather than later.

I’ll just add as Tubby was coming too, he heard Talley say… oh by the way, you’ll never guess who’s coaching Temple now …

Darn! I should've added in Keeler too! Good one! Well, won't be long until opening game vs the Hornets! Very much looking forward to the UD vs. UCONN match up at home!
