How long have you been a UD football fan? Poll

Post by Big R »

I think it would be interesting to learn how long regular readers of this Board have been following UD football. I am trying to determine if we are attracting any new fans in this format or if they are opting for formats designed for short attention spans and quick reads.

Started in 1973 when I was 8, now closing in on 61. Have lived and died with our blue hens ever since.

So far, I am the only one that started in the 1950's. Attendant every home game and 2 away games in 1959. A season ticket holders for many years. Haven't missed very many games (live, radio or TV) since then.

Went September 21, 1968 vs Hofstra after Baseball practice and I was Hooked after the 35-0 win. Have missed about 7 games in 58 seasons.

My brother took me to a Delaware game at the old Wilmington Ball Park back in the 50's. Dave Nelson was the coach.

That was the start of it for me, as well. The then, Flying Dutchmen, were favorites in the game. I was hooked.

Yes! Good memory Hound. They were favorites with a star RB named Wandy Williams and I think it was 35-0. Chuck Hall broke out with a huge game.

Started in the later 60s ('67 or '68) Dad took me to my first game. Can't remember the opponent, but UD won, and I was a fan. We didn't get season tickets, but we'd go a couple times per year and I followed the team religiously in the papers. My mom was a UD grad and she'd tell me about the times she went to the games and the players she knew back then (Delaware was much smaller, so everyone knew everyone else)...so we had a little bonding over football. :D That bond resumed when I moved to Newark and invited my mother to the Blue and Gold Club for dinner (curse UD for closing that place) where several former Hens used to hang out...fun watching mom kabitz with the old football guys.

As a kid, I loved the crowd...sitting on benches and watching and then, suddenly, everyone exploded and were standing up and cheering!!! Woot! It was like church (without the real quiet part and the kneeling part), except full of goofy folks...and it was a heck of a lot more fun.

Man, I loved any sports with crowds. I remember going to Connie Mack Stadium a couple times (we were at the last game played there....complete chaos) and heck, Brandywine Raceway had 10,000-15,000 on good nights.

Anyway, great times and memories of the Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens for almost 60 years. It has been a blast chatting with and meeting so many folks on this site. We love our Hens! :D

Born in 65 and Dad tool me to every home game, and an occasional game in PHL for 18 years until I started at UD in 1983. Don't believe I ever missed a home game until I moved to the Atlanta area in 96. Then there was the challenge of finding the game on satellite.....

My first game attended as well - as a UD freshman. There was heavy hype for Williams. I believe he was a transfer from Kansas and was said to have broken some of Gale Sayers records.

My first game was at Wilmington Park, 1952, with my uncle. It might be one of the last played at that field. Made memorable by the fact that it was my 10th birthday.

Came to UD for grad school in 1976 and watched the Hens beat E. Kentucky 37-21. After watching D3 football as an undergraduate, I was hooked on the quality of play and gameday in and outside of Delaware Stadium.

My father first bought season tix in 1968. I've pretty much attended every home game since then except for when I started working for a living and missed some games in the early-mid 80s due to travel. Even when I was a student at UD, I never had a student ticket and always used my seat in Sec J with him. We also used to go to many local away games... Nova, Navy, Temple and all of the Boardwalk Bowls, except Grambling. At some point during the early 90s, I took over my father's seats and he started going with me. At age 87, the last game he attended was the 2001 opener vs URI... rain, lightning delay and a loss. That's when he called it quits on live football games and was happy with TV and radio after that.

Well, Bill, then you had “The Unbroken Streak”, you might as well mention that, since you were honored at half-time during the 2024 season.
