Future of the CAA

Post by dchen »

I know most may not care but Delaware's move out of the CAA could generate some further movement. While the CAA has protected itself in terms of numbers with all of its recent and pending additions, it is a far flung conference with two seeming incompatible components: public schools and smaller private schools.

Without Delaware to anchor the geographic middle, could Maine, New Hampshire, UAlbany, URI, Stony Brook. and Towson seek to break-away? They could add Bryant and form a football component of the America East Conference where Maine, UNH and Bryant are already AE all other sports members. This would eliminate travel by these northern schools to Southern VA and the Carolinas and still retain an FCS tournament auto qualifier which requires six members.

Football only CAA member Villanova might consider joining the similar privates in the Patriot League. William & Mary would be isolated as a higher profile public school but with greatly reduced travel costs so they might have some decisions to make.

You have to wonder about the future of that conference. It is such a motley collection of schools now. Original members like W&M, Richmond, UNH, URI, Maine need to be wondering what their future looks like. The CAA could end up looking like a Big South/NEC/MEAC group.
