New Women's Basketball Associate Head Coach

Post by BlueHenBill »

Announced on bluehens.com that fired and losing UMES HC Fred Batchelor has been hired as Women's Basketball Associate Head Coach. As is almost always the case when UD announces a new hiring, UD ridiculously did not announce who Batchelor is replacing on the staff nor for what job they left UD (assuming they were not fired). I can't imagine that this hiring will help improve the UD Women's program which has been disappointing to say the least under HC Sarah Jenkins.

Last year the ncaa approved 5 assistant coaches for men’s and women’s basketball. Two of those assistants however cannot recruit off campus.
I believe now women’s hoops at UD has four assistants with the addition of the new guy. Experienced former head coach who may impart some wisdom.

The guy averaged 9.5 wins or so over 20 seasons 😬

I apologize in advance (I realize this site is for promoting Blue Hens sports, but don’t piss on my leg and tell me it is raining), but this is ridiculous.

“Batchelor arrives in Newark after an illustrious 20-year tenure as the head women’s basketball coach at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).”

https://whoopdirt.com/batchelor-joins-d ... ead-coach/

Illustrious? Are you serious?

https://umeshawksports.com/sports/women ... helor/2407

The guy has 4 (FOUR) winning seasons over 20 years at UMES.

FOUR. 4. IV. Less than five. Out of 20.

On what planet is that record acceptable as, “illustrious?”

Seriously, do words mean anything anymore? If gaslighting is a thing, I think ILLUSTRIOUS is about as gaseous an anything that can be used to define this guy’s record.

UMES certainly isn’t missing their coach: https://whoopdirt.com/batchelor-out-as- ... h-at-umes/

“The Hawks finished with a 15-15 overall mark this past season with a 8-6 mark in MEAC play under veteran coach Fred Batchelor. Serving as head coach since 2004, Batchelor had posted an overall winning percentage of .377 with one appearance in the MEAC tournament final while at UMES.”

Goodness…don’t let the door hit you in the..arse…as you leave.

“With an impressive coaching pedigree and a proven track record of success, Batchelor brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the program with his tenure officially beginning on June 1.”

https://whoopdirt.com/batchelor-joins-d ... ead-coach/

Here, we have a HEAD COACH (yes, we are hiring him as an assistant, but he was a head coach)…not an assistant that doesn’t have decision making control over the program…with a career losing record (and it isn’t even close),and we have folks promoting this guy as “illustrious” and, “impressive.”

Oh, and the search for Batchelor’s replacement?

“We have officially begun a national search for our next head women’s basketball coach. During the hiring process, our selection committee intends to move swiftly and with great analysis in order to identify the right person to lead Hawk women’s basketball,” says Vice President of Athletics & Recreation Tara A. Owens.”

“…intends to move swiftly and with great analysis…”.

These people aren’t serious.

I apologize for interrupting a 2 post rant over a women’s hoops assistant coach hire, but it is UMES not UMBC. Made that mistake at least 3 times during the rant.

Further, UMES has one of the worst college athletic programs on the country. Unless & until that changes, I wouldn't hire anyone from UMES. It is very unlikely that Batchelor will be a boost to the UD Women"s Basketball program in any aspect.

Thanks for the correction…it has been fixed.

…”impressive coaching pedigree and a proven track record of succcess”… .377 winning percentage over 20 years (and his record was abysmal in his previous gig as well). Now on our coaching staff. <————- Rant worthy.

after last season, this hire, though suspect, can't make things any worse. Maybe SJ will stress ball control, unselfishness, and mixing the O and D schemes.

I don't like being negative but is there any benefit in this hire?
