Re: UD golf teams/coaches
Hey Tenn Hen. Thanks for the story. Sounds like a successful year that you can look back on fondly. I know a little about what's going on in the tennis college world as I know the current UD coach a little bit. He is a good guy and I am happy for him as he has had some success with both programs. Will be interesting how they handle the new conference. May not change much with still playing some local duals and then just showing up at the conference tournament. I don't know too much how the tennis tournaments (other than conference tournament) vs duals work. All a little foreign to me. Our golf team was pretty good regionally. Never quite good enough to qualify for the NCAA regionals. Back then there was no automatic qualifiers for winning your conference tournament. We were in a section that included MD, PA, DE, NJ and NY. Four teams would qualify from the section and were voted on by some committee. Every year we were in the conversation but were always in a tier in the 5-8 range just outside the top 4. We came in 2nd in our conference tournament all 4 years I was there. The last 2 years we had moved to the NAC which wasn't great since it was further north and had to play in Hartford for the conference tournament. My junior year we had four of us finish in the top ten at conferences but unfortunately so did Hartford and they edged us out. Even though we never got to get to a bigger stage at regionals we did get to play in one big tournament my senior year. The other senior and I took it upon ourselves to write to the Duke head coach and ask if we could get an invite to their end of year tournament. We got accepted and ended our season at the Iron Duke. We had hoped Georgia Tech would be there as David Duval was also a senior then. No Georgia Tech but there was NC, NC State and Duke. It was fun to compete with them and end our college playing days at a legitimate tournament and not just one of the local regional ones. We may have finished last but it didn't matter
